Taken from his website - Juan Carlos Antonio Galliano (his birth name) was born 1960 on the British Peninsula of Gibraltar, his father's homeland, to a Spanish mother. He credits his multi-cultural roots as where his career and curiosity stem from. Galliano first went to school in Spain, the daily journey taking him via Tangiers. "I think all that - the souks, markets, woven fabrics, carpets, smells, herbs, the Mediterranean colour, all this is where my love of textiles comes from", Galliano said.
In 1966, the family moved to Streatham in South London, where his father worked as a plumber. Despite the new suburban location he kept his Spanish roots as his mother taught him how to flamenco dance on the kitchen table. The family moved to Dulwich, and Galliano attended Wilson's Grammar School for Boys. His academic performance, other than art, might have been, by some accounts, unremarkable but the same cannot be said of his appearance. The young John and his two sisters, Rosemarie and Immaculata, were always dressed in immaculately pressed and starched clothes, even for trips to the corner shop.
