Musuem Mile Additions - Pranksy
There were new additions to the Museum Mile Spring 2012 Exhibition. I find some of the new items funny. They're pretty much parodies of famous art work.
Click HERE to go to the Museum Mile store.
Here is a preview:

I guess Pranksy hit every level of the store except the third.
I just noticed on the third level:

Will you buy anything?
Do you like what Pranksy has done?

I think its really funny! :)
Yes but it not nice to make fun of art
IF STARDOLL DID IT
IF THE people who own this place in reall life do it it okay and laughtfable
justin beiber really showed up as a fat guy XD
anywho
who is pranksy and why did he ruin the art ???
These are inspired by graffiti artist Banksy. It's a bit unusual to have a certain shop (especially musuem kind) that in one moment is changed like this, but I really like the new items [:
The only thing I'm kind of upset is the fact that they added 'pransky' to the neon tunnel thing...
the third floor really is rigged because some of the things stopped moving and it was written 'Pranksy'.
I don't like "Pranksy" because it was just Stardoll's more family-friendly toned down version of Banksy's art... also, including Justin Beiber in one of Pranksy's pieces, that's just stupid... in my opinion, anyways.
And did anyone notice that they spelled Bieber wrong? Who's 'Beiber'?
I love the humor behind it all, AWESOME!!! I about died when I saw the Bieber wall LOL!!!
I know grafiti is art but it's kind of encouraging vandalism (maliciously destroying someone else's property - private or public). Which is a problem in today's society & costs a lot of money to repair.
I feel the new designers are of the "eclectic" type. Especially after their chill pill collection, lol!!!
And I have noticed most of the items in the store are not limited anymore.
I'm a huge fan of Banksy (the artist Stardoll is pretty much ripping off here) and I'm honestly kind of sad that they did this. First, changing his name to Pranksy was ridiculous - they didn't change the names of any of the other artists featured in the store, and they don't change the names of fashion designers when their clothes are used, so why deny Banksy the credit?
Second, I have a feeling that they did so because Banksy wouldn't have wanted his art (which generally is meant to make a statement rather then look like a cutesy prank) being used in this way (ie, somewhat childishly)
And of course, Stardoll is making a profit off of his work, since they're all in SD.
I know that pretty much all of the clothes, furniture, etc. on Stardoll is taken from someone's work in real-life, and it normally doesn't bother me because it's done respectfully. This "Pranksy" thing rubs me the wrong way though - it goes against the spirit of Banksy's excellent work. :(
I know, I know, I'm over reacting. It's just that Banksy is one of those artists that I'm really passionate about for various reasons (for example, he's done a piece with an icon photo of a little Vietnamese girl crying because of the effects of war, painted so that she's holding hands with Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald - it's an incredibly haunting piece of art that says a lot about how our consumer culture ignores people who are hurting around the world.)
As an art history student and a fan of this artist, I guess I'm mostly sad to see that Stardoll kind of missed the point completely. Banksy is an amazing artist with a lot to say, and a lot of it IS fairly whimsical... but Stardoll seems like the wrong place for it to me.
I dunno, my two cents, lol. :)

PS - if you like the "Pranksy" stuff on Stardoll and are interested in learning a bit about the real artist and seeing more of Banksy's work, check out Wikipedia's page on him here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy
and this excellent gallery of his work here:
http://www.banksyunmasked.co.uk/gallery2/main.php
Be warned, however, some of his work is VERY dark, and some is quite adult in nature.
Finally, here's the image I mentioned before of the Vietnamese girl with Mickey Mouse and Ronald McDonald. Be warned here as well: it's very dark:

if they abmire his art so much make there own place to show his air not ruin it with other art!
@anon is that girl with mickey and donald even wearing cloths??
No she's not wearing clothes - they've litereally been burned off of her body.
It's from a very famous photo of a Vietnamese girl named Kim Phuc crying as she runs from her village which is in flames because of a napalm strike. Her body was also badly burned - she was lucky she survived. The sadness of this image contrasted with the happy corporate icons is what makes Banksy's take on it so powerful.
Here's the wiki article about her, along with the original photo - again be warned, it's a disturbing picture because that child is in a horrific situation. However, this is a part of history. People suffered here, and their suffering should be remembered.

Banksy has been known to commit acts of vandalism; he's extremely well known for graffitti art, and many people consider him to be a criminal.
For example, after the Guantanamo Bay situation in the U.S. where soldiers had been caught torturing prisoners, Banksy snuck a dummy dressed in a Guantanamo Bay prisoner's uniform into Disneyland as a protest to the torture and a way of forcing people to confront the bad things that were going on in the world.
He hasn't, to my knowledge, ever vandalized an actual work of art. However, he has on occassion managed to make a parody of a famous artwork, and sneak it into a museum.
The parodied artworks on Stardoll ARE works of Banksy's, but he didn't wreck the original art to create them.
Here are some of the ones from Stardoll:
http://www.banksyunmasked.co.uk/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=186
http://www.banksyunmasked.co.uk/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=188
http://www.banksyunmasked.co.uk/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=302
Again, please remember that the original works of art were NOT damaged. The crimes he's committed during his career have basically been graffitti and tresspassing. While those are undeniable criminal acts, Banksy feels that they're worth the risk in order to get his messages out to the world - I tend to agree with him. :)

Ok, I know I'mm writing way more about this than more people care about, lol, and I promise this is my last post. But I did want to clarify a few things, and anyway, this is the perfect oppourtunity to introduce people to an artist who I seriously think will one day be considered one of the most important artists of our time. :)
Specifically in reference to the parody paintings like the ones on Stardoll, Wikipedia has this to say:
In March 2005, he placed subverted artworks in the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
In May 2005 Banksy's version of a primitive cave painting depicting a human figure hunting wildlife whilst pushing a shopping trolley was hung in gallery 49 of the British Museum, London. Upon discovery, they added it to their permanent collection.
This makes two things pretty clear: the first is that no, Banksy doesn't ruin actual artwork. He makes parody copies of them and occassionally sneaks them into museums. The second this is that many in the art world consider his art legitimate - the British Museum is one of the best museums in the world, and they considered his art important enough to keep.
As for the themes and ideals behind his work, Wikipedia says the following:
Banksy's works have dealt with an array of political and social themes, including anti-War, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, anti-authoritarianism, anarchism, nihilism, and existentialism. Additionally, the components of the human condition that his works commonly critique are greed, poverty, hypocrisy, boredom, despair, absurdity, and alienation.
This is why I'm bothered by Stardoll using his work. It's not because they did it in the first place. It's because they took artwork that was meant to send a message, and turned it into a cute little prank type thing that doesn't mean anything at all.
A lot of people today don't understand the issues happening in the world because of situations like this, where important works of art meant to make you think are "dumbed down" into something that says nothing.
Overall my point is that Banksy doesn't "prank" museums and make jokey painting because he thinks they're funny. He's doing it to send a message, and that just went straight over Stardoll's heads. Even using the name "Pranksy" trivializes his work into mere juvenile pranks, which it's really really not. If Stardoll wanted to use his work, that's fine, but they should have stayed true to the spirit of it and not made it into a joke. At least that's how I feel, but I know I'm pretty biased about this, lol. :P
Oh, and finally, I have no idea if he actually did a piece like the Bieber one? But it wouldn't surprise me if he did, mocking the way people have become obsessed with celebrities is a theme he uses a lot.
This is seriously my last boring art post, I promise! :P

On the 7th picture, if you click on the little girl's hair, you get a gorgeous headband! It's got flowers all over it and I'm in loveeee with it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Visit me, x.Bec.x
I hate it, too....
First of all the real name of this gorgoeus Artist is Banksy and second od all: The original pieces of his art, are much more better, they are political!!! There's no fuckn Justin Biber in his paintings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not sth wow!its kinda nice...
I don't like the name at all! Banksy is not about pranking people so why change his name to Pranksy on here? He is about sending meaningful real life messages through his art/graffiti, i suppose Stardoll have maybe just misinterpreted his work but the play on words is just annoying. I've got to say, i absolutely LOVE the paintings next to the Renoir painting on the 8th floor but they're very overpriced!
LOL, we all knew Stardoll staff was stupid, why be surprised that they don't undrestand Banksy?
OMG.
The guy painting = Bieber x)
I think they didn't name Banksy here because he didn't make such art. you can't call it 'dkny' if it's not designed by 'dkny'. you can't call a dress 'dior' if it's not deigned by dior. same here with Banksy... but the style is similar. so stardoll called it pranksy and the people who heard of banksy will know what is meant.
in addition most of us didn't hear about banksy before. but now I heard of him and I think that stardoll did a nice job in announcing modern artists like him. (they mentioned him in starblog)
take it with some humour, girls! I think the new art is funny (for example because I think that everybody can put some dots on wall.. that's no real art to me. but with david hockney it is nice)
I like it :) i find it fun and diffent i love art but i love this more it's what most kids in my class wanted to do when we went to the art museum you can tell they wanted to show how the childern see art.Just see it throgh the eyes of a child not a know it all adult. No offenise but that's what i think.
@Anon at February 25, 2012 5:37 AM
Yes but stardoll don't have the right to destroy it even in virtual.
stardoll made a museum of real art(museum mile)and then ruin it with other people art(banksy's art).
for example like those images shay post when pranksy(banksy)ruin the art with other weird art like spaceship painting and the water flowing out of the painting.the next one is the tunnel and the other are the paint in all.
i know banksy did break into the museum and ruin it
IT WAS STARDOLL
it dosen't matter that it on virtual it matter that ever body in stardoll saw the precious art have been ruin with another artist work(banksy)
i am not blaming him i am blaming stardoll because stardoll should be ashame seriously fat guy justin holding a bombox????aliens???the man in room 2?????the rat stains???
ESPECIALLY JUSTIN IN THE WALL gaian MOCKERY!
stardoll is being a kid justin is a real person and making a fool of him to the whole world!!

You make some great points, and it's awesome to see that the issue is making people think about it! And of course, having your own opinion is important, especially in the art world. I also think Banksy would agree with a lot of your comments, as a lot of his work confronts people who take things too seriously (like me, lol). ;)
I mostly wish Stardoll had chosen a less politically motivated artist, but that's my opinion.
I will say that the paintings in Museum Mile are direct copies of Banksy paintings - I provided links to them above - it's not a similar style, it's the same exact paintings, so they probably should have used his name like they did with the Renoir, the Van Gogh, etc.
I love that you've heard of Banksy now though! Did you know he was recently nominated for an Academy Award for one of his documentaries? He's really an important artist for our times, I'm sure he'll be studied by art students extensively in the future. :)
Thank you for your comments, and for keeping things good natured and polite. :)

@Lovefire1water
in reference to this comment:
Just see it throgh the eyes of a child not a know it all adult
I really hope you're not referring specifically to me? Because calling someone a know-it-all adult when they politely try to explain or teach about something they find interesting is kind of insulting. It's basically the same as if I called someone here an ignorant child, which I would NEVER DO because I really don't think anyone here is ignorant. I hope you didn't take my comments that way, and I'm sorry if you felt offended, but keeping the disscussion polite and trying to avoid insults is important to me. :)
I understand your point, and it's a very good one, but I feel strongly that Banksy was the wrong artist to do this with. His work is absolutely not meant for children, and I'm a bit worried now that kids might look him up after seeing him on Stardoll and find some really disturbing stuff that they're not ready to deal with. :(
There a lot of other whimsical artist that Stardoll used here that are great for that kind of childlike pure enjoyment of art though, like the Calder mobile and the Yayoi Kusama sculptures! I think Stardoll did a really good job with those. :D
- Cestlavenus on Stardoll
@ Cestlavenus: no, I didn't know that. but thank you for the information :)
@Luca: "I think that everybody can put some dots on wall.. that's no real art to me"¨
Yeah right, no real art. Then why you didn't put the dots on the wall yourself? You could have made a nice sum of money out of it, hmm?
Obviously you have no clue what art is about, otherwise you wouldn't embarass yourself saying such stupid things.
Before somebody starts whining (again): I profoundly respect everybody's right to express their opinion, so kindly respect my right to do the same.
@Cestlavenus
It is true that stardoll is encouraging kids to try unappropriate
Like
Bikinis
see throw clothin
and now
grown up art.
stardoll isn't meant for kids now
that is because
1.)stardoll don't care about kids
2.)they don't care how bikini affect kids
3.)they forget kids go to stardoll
It can be true that children can look up to adult art.
It like stardoll is encouraging Kids to like him
stardoll again is careless
Stardoll also encourage kids to go on facebook and twitter by mail and the stardollar offers also download a useless bar thing just to get stardollars.they also deliever a poster to our suite.
hope my message wasn't ehhh..u know
thanks for reading
@ anon February 25, 2012 10:00 PM: to me art is sth. that not everybody can reproduce. everyone can put a black quadrat on a white ground. that's nothing special. think about grecian sculptures or paintings out of the baroque era. I think that art up to the beginning of the 20th centuary was great. but modern art is normally sth. that I can't make friends with. what should be expressed by some dots on a wall? what should this 'art' tell me then? every art has sth. to express. in particular if it obviously can be done by every child.
I visited a modern exhibition last year. there were much fotographs and I liked about 5 of 100 or so.
But did you hear about alexa maede, edgar müller, tim walker or liu bolin? these persons do great art I think.
What is art to you?
It is on the 3rd floor..
Well thank you 8:09, I had no idea who Bansky was until you posted. It's nice to be informed every once in a while and it does seem like Stardoll was only making fun of the poor guy. Well, I guess that's Stardoll's bad karma as I'm sure they have much more coming to them.
Edgar Degas is my favorite Impressionest Artist. I wish I could buy the Degas ballerina statue on Stardoll!!
